Sonic TPC
We sonified simulated data of the Time Projection Chamber at CERN. See time projection chamber.
See time projection chamber for more information and soundfiles.
Data for this example stem from simulations of the Time Projection Chamber (TPC) of the ALICE project at CERN. Particle detection is based on pattern recognition algorithms, but is still today double-checked with visualization tools. The data are the simulated raw data expected in the measurements. The sonification is based on a parameter mapping that uses the raw data of single electron hits, allowing for a perceptual grouping into tracks following auditory grouping principles. Based on the fact that ‘electrons’ (in fact electron clouds) hit the wires with a certain charge (the number of electrons), the wires are taken as being analogous to strings, which are hit and resonate with their basic frequency depending on their length.
